Funky ass Belgian jazz. How come nobody is making music like this anymore?

I haven’t had much time to sit down and write anymore. Life is throwing a lot of shit, and luckily I can juggle like nobodies business. I still have a little time to post about music. Specifically today about Placebo.

I can honestly say this is my favorite jazz.. It’s light. Funky. Almost library sounding, but the difference is how incredible the songwriting. Well thought out progressions and patterns keep it from ever feeling to repetitive or boring. Music drenching in analog goodness. Killer rhythm section with clavinets and flutes.. Super memorable horn ports. Jazz is never this catchy.. or this funky.

The song Balek sounds like it very easily could’ve been an early 90’s DJ Shadow experiment. Truly one of those WTF IS THAT songs.. that makes this whole planet more interesting. I feel bad that Placebo is relegated to the nerdy crate diggers. The world needs to hear this music. They need to do a TIMELESS concert featuring Marc Moulin.

Underground Jazz, strong drinks, and heavy beats. Speaking of which (on an unrelated note) you can catch me with the Gonzo Groove project every Sunday in Las Vegas @ The Artifice. I have no reason to plug my shit on Tumblr.. so I never do, but if you’re ever in town.. well hell come down and i’ll buy you a drink. Cheers.

I always thought Norah Jones was sexy..

..her music on the other hand. Not so sexy. I mean it’s fine, but where’s the flavor? Let’s take a look at the music of Ananda Shankar. Yes! Now let’s look at the music of Anoushka Shankar Norah’s half sister. Do you see where I’m getting at here?

She’s beautiful, she’s talented, and she’s boring. Don’t get me wrong. Her music is good, but she doesn’t really have a wild side. I keep waiting for it to come out, but after half-sleeping/half-listening to her new Danger Mouse collaboration album.. I’m waiting for something to bubble up.

Now, as the title of this post suggests. She needs to do a Hip Hop album. Why? Listen.

Norah my girl, I honestly didn’t know you had it in you. Her Laidback style works really well with the music. She sounds soulful, re-energized and FRESH. Very unexpected R&B style.

Paco De Lucia is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. However the prices of your tickets are so high a guy like me can only afford to sit in the nose bleeds. Bottom line is your ticket prices are too expensive. It is not fair. How can you spread the art & culture of flamenco at $100 bucks a pop?

Las Vegas you are too expensive, and you are teetering a carrot over a hungry horse. The Smith center in its current form is a cruel joke for the elite. The people of this city deserve better.

As you CAN tell.. I’m on a hard Can-kick this week. Hey, What can I say.. a cute dark haired hipster girl slinking around with her band doing a solid Can cover of VITAMIN C. This is right up my alley..

Even though I thought it was a pretty straight-forward cover without too much frill.. I think that it is GOOD. In fact, the fact that they didn’t just fuck it up is probably why I like it so much. There’s a whole slew of Vitamin C covers that don’t quite make the cut.

Fortunatly for me.. I’ll get a chance to meet Adrian Quesada soon, as his band Brownout should be coming to my city next weekend. I was going through some of their most recent output and saw this new EP from his other sound project The Echocentrics. I really really like this idea of taking something in the box and making it more Organic and live.

He couldn’t have picked a better subject as Timbaland has always been a true sonic innovator. Appreciated and under-appreciated in the same breath.

I think this ep might get slept on.. but I think it’s real dope. How does it make you feel?

Stark Reality - Too much Tenderness

A couple years back Monty Stark made a cameo appearance on Soul Strut.. a simple PM conversation about some recording gear turned into many little online conversations about nothing. I had somehow befriended ol Monty Stark from the legendary Stark Reality group. What a hilarious guy.. Such an odd ball.

I’m quite lucky as well because ol Monty passed away around 2009.. He told me how I gotta get that new record and how that Egon is a helluva guy if i get around to meet him. Well of course I end up meeting Egon under a completely different circumstance that didn’t quite completely play out the way I would’ve liked. I give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s got good taste in music and the Monty seal of approval. Good enough for me.

I feel like the Stark Reality is still this hip hop footnote, but really they hold a special place in my heart for this fun funk, jazz and psychedelic music that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Like no other band I can place. A real breath of fresh air.. Fuzz pedals and vibes why didn’t I think of that.

You rule Monty!
